A little while back I was watching the World Music Awards in
Monaco. It was an amazing show. Not only did it included some of
the best acts in America, it included the best from the entire
world. As you should know by now, I am the type of guy that will
listen to anything, anything that has a good beat and rhythm to
it of course. This is evident just by going through my CD case,
in which you will find music from India, Greece, Italy, Armenia,
Turkey, Iran, America, Spain, and all Arab Countries. This I
think is amazing. We live in a world that is divided by
different points of view, religion, culture, and language; but
for music, we can all sit down and enjoy music from all over the
world. People say that laughter is the universal language, which
is correct, however music is a close second. One does not have
to understand the language of a certain singer to sit down and
appreciate what message that person is trying to convey. I
don’t understand everything that an Arab singer is saying, but
I can still listen to it and enjoy it, possibly even attain a
message from it. The message could be as simple as, “I love
her,” or just “have a good time.” One doesn’t have to be
verbally bilingual to understand songs in different languages,
rather willing to “feel” what the singer is trying to say.
This is so true when listening to artists such as Amr Diab
(Arabic), Amália Rodrigues (Portuguese), or Googoosh (Farsi).
One can “feel” what the singer is trying to say without even
knowing the language that they are speaking in. In the way they
sing, the words, the tone of their voice and the background
music. Of course each of the three artists that I have named are
superior. There are of course the good, the bad, and the ugly in
every language group, so not all singers are worth the time of
actually trying to figure out what they are saying, but we like
to think that they are.
We live in this incredible world that has been blessed with
outstanding talent. To not take advantage and enjoy this
remarkable talent would be a shame. Even if you don’t
understand a thing that the person is saying or you don’t
“feel” it either, still listen to it. It will make you more
culturally diverse, thus even possibly a better person, and
everybody likes good people. Dreams are necessary to life.
